Gobi & Aguat get Savvy About Water Quality is a story designed for grades K-3 about how one water drop named Gobi goes through the water treatment process with his friends, Aguat and Savvy, in order to become clean drinking water. The story begins with a description of the water cycle as Gobi evaporates from Feather River and finds himself among the clouds where he meets up his friend Aguat. Soon, the two friends rain down from the sky into a canal that brings them to Lake Perris and then to EMWD. At the treatment plant, the friends begin the cleaning process. They flow through the bar screen, the floc basin, the membrane filters, and the Chlorine Contact basin where Gobi befriends Savvy. Savvy is then taken with other water drops to be tested and, once the water is deemed safe to drink, the three friends travel through a faucet into the water bottle belonging to a boy named Eugene. There, Gobi, Aguat, and Savvy wait for their next adventure.
The Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards aligned curriculum packet includes a detailed lesson plan, an assessment to test student knowledge, a journal activity for students to relate the story to their experiences, and activity sheets that include a crossword puzzle and a matching activity.
The content can be used as a stand-alone curriculum or as a grade-level presentation. In addition, each student will have the opportunity to sign-up to take a plush Savvy character home along with a parent letter explaining the lesson so the students can teach their families and friends what they learned about the water treatment process. At the conclusion of the lesson plan, the journal entries can be mailed back to EMWD, using the postage paid envelope, where they will be bound together as a story for each of the students to keep as a reminder of how hard EMWD works to make sure our drinking water is safe and a memory of their own adventure with Savvy.
